Am I the only one that thought Apple made a mistake this week? After last week’s episode where outie Mark began his reintegration, I was fully expecting Severance to pick up right there. Would Mark’s innie and outie finally be able to communicate? If so, what would that mean about, well, everything? But nope. In typical Severance fashion, the next episode began in a totally different place. And not just any new place. A place that was so jarring and new I thought either I had missed an episode or the streamer uploaded the wrong episode, neither of which was true. This is just the madness of “Woe’s Hollow,” the fourth episode of Severance season two, maybe the most messed up and intense episode yet.
On Severance, the world is so isolated we tend to forget that the innies who work on the severed floor at Lumon have never been outside. And so, as each one awakens in the middle of a vast, snow-covered woodland complete with a frozen lake, we’re as shocked as they are. Once Mark, Helly, Irv, and Dylan regroup they notice there’s a TV randomly on a nearby ridge and we are as confounded as they are. Is this place real? Is it a simulation? How did this TV and DVD player get there? Oh, and how did all of the innies end up out there dressed in warm, black, fuzzy outfits?
We don’t know. What we learn though is this is an ORTBO—an “Outdoor Retreat and Team Building Occurance”—that they have been gifted because they were curious about the outside world. Mr. Milchick, via video, says it was done with their outie’s permission and that over the course of the next two days, they’ll be able to explore Dieter Eagan National Forest, which is where they are. We know Kier Eagan, he’s the deity of Lumon, but who is Dieter? The innies are told all the answers they seek are in The Fourth Appendix, a mysterious, banned text that Kier wrote in the final hours of life. There’s also some weird info about four tempers and stuff but it’s all just so out there, it’s a little hard to process.
Milchick tells the innies they’ll find this book somewhere called the Scissor Cave and that there will be help along the way. Help, they very quickly realize, comes in the form of soulless doppelgangers of each of them, who pop up along the way to point them in the right direction. First, it’s Mark, then Helly and eventually Dylan and Irv.
It should be noted that as all of this is happening, Ben Stiller’s direction and Jessica Lee Gagné’s cinematography are breathtaking. Incredible compositions, picturesque long shots. You almost sense everyone involved with the show felt a little like the characters—cramped by those suppressive Lumon offices—and are now relishing a chance to spread their wings in the outdoors. The whole episode, especially the early parts, felt almost like a Stanley Kubrick movie.
The innies find the Scissor Cave and The Fourth Appendix. It reveals that the forest’s namesake, Dieter, was Kier’s twin and to fully understand their relationship, they’ll have to walk in his footsteps on the way to Woe’s Hollow. Which, again, is at the center of so much odd, seemingly superfluous information, we can’t help but almost block it all out.
They hit the road, reading the book along the way. But, also, Irv seems decidedly on edge. He’s still suspicious of Helly’s lies about what she saw as her outie and, when the group confronts a mysterious, large, dead animal, he suggests they eat it. He later regrets the latter statement but we can tell something is off. Something that will soon come to manifest.
Finally, they reach Woe’s Hollow, the end of their journey, with all four of their creepy, dead-eyed doppelgangers waiting for them. Mr. Milchick, the real one, is also waiting and instantly lies by saying the waterfall they’re looking at is the tallest on the planet. The innies obviously don’t know he’s lying, but the audience does, and it’s a very telling moment that once again keys us into the fact we can’t trust a word Milchick says.
That’s especially important because Milchick is about to read them a story. After bringing the innies to a very nice campsite, complete with food, tents, and fire (the innies have also never seen fire, which is kind of fun), he sits the group down to read more from The Fourth Appendix. The story is about Dieter dying because, well, he masturbates. It’s a very graphic, odd story that has everyone entranced except for Helly. She kind of chuckles at it, which really annoys Mr. Milchick. In retaliation for their lack of comprehension, he burns all the Kier-faced marshmallows he was going to allow them to roast. It’s a very over-the-top response, one that confuses and upsets the innies.
Irv is also still agitated. He’s mad at Helly’s laughing but also still boiling with the belief that she’s been lying about what happened during the overtime contingency. The two trade insults, everything gets incredibly awkward, and Irv storms off into the darkness. Helly retreats to Mark’s tent where she’s instantly regretful about the situation but, also, realizes this is the first time—maybe ever—the two of them have been all alone. They process to have sex, which is intercut with shots of Irv off alone in the woods. It’s kind of a jarring juxtaposition of how Helly and Irv are each reacting to their own fear and loneliness.
Before things really hit the fan, Helly and Mark have a key post-coital conversation. She tells him she doesn’t like who she was on the outside, the first time she’s admitting to lying about it. Mark is curious, of course, but says it’s okay because he only needs to know who she is in here. The tender, important moment is then punctuated with Mark seeing Helly’s face turn into his wife Gemma. It’s our first, and only, hint to remind us of what is going on outside here. That outie Mark is attempting to reintegrate both sides of himself.
Meanwhile, Irv has a horrible nightmare in which his Lumon workspace is in a creepy, rotted forest. Burt is there though, as well as a demonic presence from the Kier/Dieter story. We don’t know what it means, but it gives Irv some purpose, which he acts on the second he gets up.
Irv heads back to camp; along the way, he finds Helly, who left Mark asleep in his tent. He confronts her once again, this time with the accusation that she’s not even innie Helly. He believes she’s outie Helly and, if she’s outie Helly, she must be a very powerful person at Lumon. Helly doesn’t deny it and Irv attacks. He continually dunks her head in a creek as the rest of the group, including Mr. Milchick, arrive. “She’s an outie, she’s a fucking mole, she’s an Eagan!” Irv screams. He wants someone to turn her back into the Helly they know—to which Helly screams, “Goddamnit, Seth, do it.”
I got goosebumps just writing that previous sentence. It’s Helly’s acknowledgment that, at least on this ORTBO, it hasn’t been her innie. It’s been her outie Helly. That revelation—and especially that she slept with Mark—is kind of mind-boggling, in a very awesome way. “Seth,” as she calls Mr. Milchick, grabs a radio and screams to someone to “Remove the Glasgow block now,” whatever that means. It happens, Helly dings, and Irv lets her go.
An outraged Milchick, watched by the rest of the stunned innies, tells Irv that he will be immediately and permanently dismissed. Irv gets one more message out to Dylan, to “Hang in there,” but is told he can no longer converse with anyone from Lumon. The episode then ends with Irv’s innie going away, and the rest of his friends looking after him in shock.
From the revelation about Helly, to the Eagan mythology, to the question of what the hell is this outdoor location in the first place, the fourth episode of Severance may have been its most out there yet, literally for sure and maybe even figuratively. The outdoor excursion gave us more questions, more issues, and even more to fear about what Lumon is capable of.
